the girls christmas tradition…our bakeoff

First of all, if you don’t follow me on Pinterest please do so…lots of these recipes are on my boards;-)

This year and a few years past…

So…this year was our 21st annual Bake-off. Each year, usually the second to last weekend before Christmas, my mother, her sisters, and their daughters & daughter in laws (my cousins) get together at one of our homes. We usually rotate who hosts;-)We arrive about 8-9 in the morning with large Rubbermade totes full of ingredients, pans, mixers, and everything we need to bake all day. Everyone brings what they need for their particular recipes (except a few things which the “host house” has-baking powder, baking soda, etc.) and everything they need to mix and bake their cookies. As we all get to the host house we sip our coffee and open our bakeoff gifts. Everyone brings a little something, usually baking related but that’s not a requirement, for each person and we open and look at everything. I think we all still have cutting boards, spatulas, hand towels, etc. from years past that we bring each year. Here is Morgan, my cousin, with a 2008 spatula (notice the writing on the handle):

We literally bake cookies all day, rotating “who has the oven” and usually either the host house has two ovens or we rent an extra…otherwise we’d be there all night too! We stop and order something non-sugary from lunch because, by then, we all have a film on our teeth from tasting batter or cookies and the last thing we want is more sugar! We try to wrap up about 5-6 PM and by then we have tables upon tables of stacked cookies…

At the end of the night we all gather around the table and distribute the cookies equally between all of the families. And then we, in turn, put them in tins and bags to give away to friends, families, and co-workers…(here are some I made for teachers and stuff)

Enjoy a little peek into our day…
